In the part down by the creek, he didn't chicken out. It's just what they asked him to say went against what he believed in, so he wasn't going to do it.
In the part with Debra where he was supposed to be shackled, I'm not sure exactly. I don't know if he didn't want to sit on the dirty floor, or if it was also against his beliefs.
