Uffff... so many questions... start with plain C. When you will feel yourself more or less fluent with it -- move to C++.

Reply:Java and .Net are used far more widely in businesses today. If you are interested in business programming, you should start by learning Java. Once you get Java down, any other language will come naturally.
Reply:C++ gives a good trade off between writing code in a high level language, and getting optimized binary code output. It allows for more control over memory management and algorithm design than other languages such as .Net and Java provide.

C++ developers are not in high demand anymore, more places are building quick and dirty (and I mean dirty) business apps. PCs are so powerful these days that algorithm analysis and good design practices are going out the window. It is for these reasons that the world needs more disciplined C++ programmers.

If you plan on working intimately with computers, I highly recommend learning a programming language and C++ is probably the best one to know.
Reply:Although C++ is a difficult language to master and gets extrememly involved when it comes to larger applications (especially with memory management...) the overall uses are numerous. It is a very powerful programming language and is used immensely in industries throughout the world. I have worked for 2 software companies now and both have major (by major I mean worldwide use by 20,000+ people) applications that are written in the C++ language.

Learning C++ will open the door for you as a programmer to learn any other language. I learned C++ first in school and after that other languages came a lot more quickly and easily. I now have a handful of languages I can code in fairly easily.
