FTP connection problems?

Hi, my problem is that for some reason whenever I try and login (via filezilla) I get the error message:

"Trace: FtpControlSocket.cpp(1001): OnConnect(10053) OpMode=1 OpState=-1 caller=0x003bbb24

Trace: FtpControlSocket.cpp(1140): DoClose(0) OpMode=1 OpState=-1 caller=0x003bbb24

Trace: FtpControlSocket.cpp(3986): ResetOperation(4100) OpMode=1 OpState=-1 caller=0x003bbb24

Error: Unable to connect!

Status: Waiting to retry... (5 retries left)"

Now I have a rooter set up - but I have tried on another computer linked to the rooter and it works fine.

So I'm guessing its something specific to my computer. I've tried messing around with the firewall settings etc.

I'm running xp professional 2002.

Any tips /suggestions etc would be greatly appreciated.

I'm extremely novice when it comes to these things - so in as simply language as is possible thanks. ;)

Thanks in advance.

FTP connection problems?
You've said that it works on another computer so that's a start - the problem is somewhere on your computer or the way the router connects you.

The first thing to try is to see if you can reach the computer from yours. Open up a command window by selecting 'run' from the start menu (or pressing windows key + r) and type "cmd"

Type "ping" follows by the address of the server, then press enter. With any luck this should print various lines on the display telling you how long it takes to access the server.

If that fails, type "tracert" then the server name. This will tell you how far along the route the connection gets before it fails. If it stalls at the router (usually something like 192.168.1.1 or similar) then something in the router is preventing your connection.

If the router is the problem, then things get trickier. If you can connect to other ftp sites, then this shouldn't be the cause.

Assuming we pass the tests so far, the thing to do is try to connect with a different ftp program, just in case filezilla is the cause. With the command window still open, type:

"ftp" followed by the server name.

It should then ask you for your user name and password. If this succeeds, then you need to see if there is anything odd in the filezilla settings, or try another ftp program.
