WHat distro are you running? Did you get the appropriate build tools packages? Either it all comes packaged as something like build-essential or build-tools, or you install gcc, the development files, etc. individually.
Ask your distro forums for help, if after reading the documentation, you don't know what to install in synaptic or yum or whatever.
